Are you ready to accelerate success within your DevOps team? Let’s take a moment to define what DevOps actually means. DevOps is the process and practices in which developers and IT operations work closely together to optimize and accelerate software development and delivery. DevOps allows software teams to break down silos and encourage teamwork from beginning to end of the software development lifecycle. As you probably already know, DevOps demands a winning culture and correct best practices to be successful for now and years to come. Here are a few key points you can implement now to create a winning DevOps culture.
Focus on leadership and your people:
The key to any organization starts with people. As much as the IT world can get technical really fast, we have to take a step back and examine our strengths and weaknesses. Daily huddles, individual employee check ins, and receiving team feedback are critical components to prevent miscommunication and mitigate future errors and project complexities. It is important for leadership whether it is a Director of Software Engineering or DevOps manager, to consistently deliver messaging and set targets for the IT team to meet and also allows for transparency and motivation for individual members.
Check your processes and ask why:
I can probably go into any DevOps right now and find something they are doing within processes(or lack thereof), tooling, CI/CD pipelines, etc that can be eliminated due to bad decisions and technical waste. Software teams consistently feel the need to adopt emerging technologies and implement a specific step within their workflows before asking…why? Is this process or tool going to get us closer to our deadline? Does this emerging solution accelerate security and meet our customer demands? Continue to ask yourself why to keep you focused on outcomes rather than just spinning the wheels in more technology. People, processes, and products performed in a best practice fashion, will set you on the path for achieving a winning DevOps culture.
